75% Opposition Opinion, AI Data Centers as a Midterm Election Issue
In the United States, artificial intelligence (AI) data centers have emerged as a major issue in the midterm elections. In the Ohio Senate race, opposition to data centers is becoming a burden for the Republican candidate. The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) has sent an internal memo to major AI companies regarding the "Ohio Data Center Risk," and Democrats are utilizing data centers to attack Republican Senator John Husted. According to polls, Democrat Sherrod Brown is leading Husted by 8 percentage points. The NRSC warned that if Husted loses, other politicians will also avoid new data center projects. In Ohio, plans for data centers from major companies like NVIDIA, OpenAI, and Meta are underway. Currently, there are over 4,000 data centers operating across the United States, with more than 3,000 proposed or in progress. Data centers are facing community backlash due to issues such as high power demand, potential increases in public utility rates, and water usage. According to a survey by Embold Research, the opposition rate to data center construction increased from 51% in February 2026 to 75% in August 2026. The Governor of Pennsylvania has signed an executive order imposing stricter requirements on data center development. Both Republican and Democratic candidates are aware of local opposition, mentioning regulations or cost burdens related to data centers.
