AMD to Invest $10 Billion in Taiwan's AI Semiconductor Ecosystem
AMD is set to invest over $10 billion in Taiwan's AI semiconductor ecosystem. This investment focuses on expanding the supply chain, including advanced packaging, substrates, testing, and rack assembly, rather than solely on a partnership with TSMC. In a statement released on May 21, AMD announced that it aims to broaden strategic partnerships and enhance advanced packaging production capabilities for AI infrastructure through investments across the Taiwanese ecosystem. Packaging partners mentioned include ASE, SPIL, and PTI, with whom AMD is developing and validating wafer-based 2.5D bridge interconnect technology. The relationship with TSMC is confirmed in the process technology domain, with Venice being noted as the first high-performance computing product to enter production ramp using TSMC's 2-nanometer process. AMD also outlined plans to expand production to TSMC's Arizona facility in the future. Lisa Su, AMD's CEO, described Taiwan as an ecosystem equipped for everything from materials to rack-scale manufacturing, expressing a commitment to keeping various technological pathways open. AMD's Helios rack-scale AI platform, which bundles Venice and Instinct MI450X GPUs, is expected to be deployed starting in the second half of 2026. Market reactions have been positive, with AMD's stock rising by 8% following the announcement.
