Cryptographic Products: Security Must Operate Beyond the Screen
The success of cryptographic products depends more on users naturally passing through necessary procedures than on their awareness of complex security technologies. At ETHTaipei 2026 held in Taipei, Taiwan, on the 13th, developer C.C. Liang explained the design approach and usability issues of cryptocurrency projects. Unlike general consumer software, the more effectively security operates in cryptographic products, the harder it is for users to perceive its presence. Liang introduced a convenient receipt method using QR codes through the development case of a digital certificate wallet. In this process, zero-knowledge proofs and selective disclosure were utilized, but users only experienced scanning the QR code. He stated that reducing friction in blockchain transactions could make the user experience similar to that of general banking applications. Liang pointed out the characteristics of cryptographic products, such as low motivation for security learning, high abstraction, and lack of immediate feedback, emphasizing that advancements in security technology should reduce the cognitive burden on users. He added that cryptographic products should be designed to separate experiences that users can directly verify from security features that are difficult to validate, and that complex judgments should be left to machines and industry standards.
