Ernesto Aharonian on Bitcoin in Uruguay and Its Trade
In episode 44 of Separating Money and State, Ernesto Aharonian, founder of Escuelita Bitcoin in Uruguay, discusses his experience teaching Bitcoin in public schools and his business that accepts Bitcoin, La Parrilla de Satoshi, in Asunción. Aharonian considers the Bitcoin ecosystem in Uruguay to be "small and weak" and mentions the distrust in institutions, despite the quality of public health and education. To teach Bitcoin, he used an indirect approach, focusing on the "history of money and technology." He highlights that opening his business in Uruguay would cost three times more due to bureaucracy and taxes, labeling Uruguay as the most expensive country in Latin America. Aharonian recalls the corralito of 2002 and mentions the Financial Inclusion Law 19.210, which mandated the payment of salaries through electronic means, although it was later relaxed. He comments on the Blockchain Summit and its evolution into Be Orange, a Bitcoin-Only event. He also mentions the community as the real asset of Bitcoin and suggests that Iran could have used Bitcoin for payments related to the Strait of Hormuz. Aharonian cites the Coldcard case as an example of reliance on third parties and promotes Monero for privacy reasons, rejecting the dogmatism of a single tool.
