Ethereum Excites Me More Than Bitcoin: Interesting Situation on the Chart and ETF Fund Data
Bitcoin continues to attract more capital to spot ETFs in nominal terms, but once we consider the size of both markets, the advantage begins to shift towards Ethereum. American spot ETFs with exposure to ETH completed their seventh consecutive session with a positive balance yesterday (August 25), while at the same time, the ETH/BTC pair entered a tighter consolidation on the chart (bullish flag formation?) following a strong preceding upward impulse. Both signals lead me to believe that Ethereum's relative strength against Bitcoin has clearly increased. Is this the beginning of altseason?
Ethereum ETFs Outperform Bitcoin ETFs
Data from Farside Investors shows that capital is flowing into crypto asset exposure funds at a proportional, measured rate. Between August 17 and 25, American Ethereum funds gathered a total of about $988 million in net inflows from traditional market investors. Each of the seven sessions ended with a positive result. Only on August 19 and 20 did investors deposit $186.8 million and $219.5 million, respectively, and on August 25, another $179.8 million was added.
Bitcoin still wins against Ethereum when looking solely at dry dollars. BTC ETFs accumulated nearly $2.57 billion in the aforementioned seven sessions. On the last day, it was $314.3 million. Over 90% of this amount went, as usual, to the IBIT giant BlackRock. BlackRock also dominates in the case of Ethereum. ETHA and ETHB accounted for about $154 million of the total $179.8 million inflows on August 25.
Only comparing these numbers with the size of the funds shows a more interesting picture. According to data from SoSoValue cited by Decrypt, Bitcoin ETFs started the previous week with assets of around $76.6 billion and ended it with $96.1 billion. During this time, they attracted $1.92 billion in fresh capital. Ethereum funds grew from $10.5 billion to $14.3 billion and gathered about $697 million net.
In simple terms, this means an inflow corresponding to about 2.5% of the initial assets of Bitcoin funds and about 6.6% of the assets of Ethereum funds. Proportionally, the demand for ETH was therefore more than two and a half times greater.
ETH/BTC with Bullish Triangle Formation. Will the Flag Break Out?
On the ETH/BTC chart, the situation is becoming equally interesting. After a sharp spike from the range of 0.0295-0.0300, the pair then entered consolidation. The next local peaks are getting lower, but at the same time, the lows are getting higher. A narrowing triangle has formed, with its apex close to the current price.
Due to the strong movement preceding the consolidation, it can be treated as a potential bullish flag. However, the word "potential" is key. The formation itself does not yet determine the direction. Confirmation of a bullish scenario would only come with a sustained breakout above the descending resistance line and maintaining the price above it, preferably after previously bouncing off the upper boundary of the triangle, which would change from resistance to support.
According to current quotes from the TradingView platform for the ETH/BTC pair, the price is now oscillating around 0.0312 BTC. This means that for one Bitcoin, you now need to pay about 32 ethers. An increase in the ETH/BTC price would indicate that Ethereum is appreciating faster than Bitcoin or that it is better withstanding corrections.
Quo Vadis, Ethereum and Altcoins?
The upcoming sessions may answer both of the questions posed above simultaneously. First: will investors continue to deposit $100-200 million daily into ETFs with exposure to Ethereum, and will the growing demand also begin to be visible in the ETH to BTC ratio? A breakout from the current consolidation would strengthen this thesis. A drop below the rising boundary of the triangle, especially a return to around 0.0307, would clearly weaken it.
This type of analysis is not, it is worth mentioning, useful for those interested in allocating capital to Ethereum. ETH, being the second-largest token in the world by market capitalization, is also the number one alternative cryptocurrency (altcoin). As a rule, ceteris paribus, the price of ether thus determines the sentiment of the altcoin sector, which includes "all cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin."
