General Motors Expands Investigation into Brake System Defect Affecting 1.16 Million Vehicles
The investigation by U.S. safety authorities into allegations of defects in General Motors' (GM) electronic brake system has expanded to include over 1.16 million vehicles. The investigation targets electric vehicles such as the Cadillac Lyriq and Chevrolet Blazer EV, as well as some internal combustion engine models. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has transitioned its investigation of GM's electronic brake system, known as 'eBoost', from a preliminary evaluation to an engineering analysis. Hundreds of accident reports, over 20 incidents of collisions or fires, and at least six injury cases have been reported. The investigation was initiated in April 2024 following a report from a 2023 Cadillac Lyriq driver, who stated that the brake pedal became stiff along with a 'Brake System Failure' warning. GM identified the potential for spindle cracks in the eBoost system as a possible cause during its internal investigation; however, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) determined that some reports did not align with GM's explanation. Additional reports included instances of 'immediate loss of brake assist' during the braking process. NHTSA warned that this could increase the risk of collisions or injuries. eBoost is a system that uses electronic control instead of traditional mechanical connections, which may fail to provide proper brake assistance in the event of a defect. GM has been implementing eBoost across various models since 2019.
