Government Plans to Launch 800 MW of Gas Generation by 2026
The Ukrainian government plans to put into operation at least 800 MW of gas generation by 2026, of which no less than 200 MW should be provided by state energy companies. Additionally, repairs of energy equipment with a total capacity of at least 8 GW are scheduled before the heating season of 2026-2027. The development of distributed generation has been identified as one of the main tasks for 2026, which involves the use of small installations in various regions to mitigate the impact of attacks on energy facilities. The government intends to complete measures to enhance engineering and technical protection at critical energy infrastructure sites. Among other tasks for 2026 are the formation of strategic natural gas reserves, the launch of a minimum oil reserves system, and an increase in domestic gas production. In 2026-2027, preparations for the integration of Ukrainian electricity and natural gas markets into the EU internal market are also planned. By 2027, all enterprises in the fuel and energy complex designated for privatization or liquidation are expected to be transferred to the management of the State Property Fund. As of June, the capacity of distributed gas generation in Ukraine has already exceeded 1.8 GW, with 249 installations having a total capacity of over 522 MW under construction.
