Hanwha Ocean Expands AI Welding Application to 67% and Targets U.S. Naval Market
Hanwha Ocean (042660) is targeting the U.S. naval and shipbuilding market by utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics. On August 10, Hanwha Group announced that Hanwha Defense USA made a preliminary proposal to acquire Austal. Austal USA has delivered 34 vessels to the U.S. Navy since 2009 and operates businesses that include unmanned and autonomous vessels as well as AI-based maritime systems. In a statement on July 21, Hanwha revealed that it has applied AI to 67% of the indoor welding processes at its Geoje plant, aiming for 100% automation by 2030. The AI application rate for surface treatment and painting processes has also been set at 50%. Hanwha is establishing a digital production center at the Geoje plant and is updating process data in real-time through drones and IoT sensors. After acquiring the Philippine shipyard, it plans to apply smart yard technology to U.S. shipyards, with the production management system targeted for deployment by November 2026. Hanwha has signed a memorandum of understanding with Raytheon for next-generation vessel design collaboration, and the acquisition of Austal USA has not yet been finalized.
