Meta Restructures, Invites Some AI Department Employees to Return to Management Positions
Meta has invited some employees to reassume management positions as it adjusts personnel arrangements in its Applied Artificial Intelligence (AAI) department. Established by Meta this year, AAI is responsible for training AI models and has approximately 7,000 employees, some of whom were originally managers but no longer hold managerial roles after the transfer. The reassignment is voluntary for employees. This move signifies a partial shift in Meta's previous direction of reducing middle management, as the company has advocated for increasing efficiency by downsizing teams and reducing management layers over the past year. Zuckerberg champions a streamlined, startup-like organization. This year, Meta has cut about 10% of its workforce through large-scale layoffs, with management personnel being a primary focus. Some employees reassigned to AAI had previously complained about being "drafted" into the department, but were later allowed to leave it.
