Meta's Facial Recognition Patent Registered, Privacy Controversy Rekindled
Meta's smart camera patent has been registered, reigniting the privacy debate surrounding smart glasses and facial recognition technology. The patent includes technology for classifying people and actions from camera footage, with a priority date of October 18, 2019, an application date of March 7, 2022, a publication date of September 5, 2024, and a registration date of March 10, 2026. According to the document, the camera identifies individuals and detects actions based on collected data, storing them as media files. Unlike regular smartphone photography, smart glasses allow the wearer to capture their surroundings, raising privacy concerns. Meta explains the 'capture LED' that notifies users when recording is taking place in the AI glasses FAQ, stating that if users disable it, the camera will turn off. However, the introduction of facial recognition features remains uncertain, as Meta has removed the relevant code from the app. Civic groups and politicians are strongly opposing Meta's plans for facial recognition glasses, demanding their withdrawal. Meta had previously announced in 2021 that it would discontinue its Facebook facial recognition system, and this patent registration demonstrates experiments in the smart glasses and AI assistant environment.
