NEAR co-founder advocates formal verification to combat AI-assisted hacking

NEAR Protocol co-founder Illia Polosukhin emphasized the need for formal verification to secure blockchain code against AI hacking. He noted that AI has accelerated the discovery of software vulnerabilities, outpacing traditional security measures. Polosukhin highlighted that cybersecurity has relied on human code reviews, which are increasingly inadequate due to advanced AI models. He proposed that developers adopt mathematical proofs to ensure code integrity, stating that AI can now assist in generating these proofs, significantly reducing the time required from years to weeks. An example is Project Tachyon, which utilized AI-assisted verification to confirm that Zcash's Ironwood shielded pool is free from a counterfeiting bug found in its Orchard pool. Polosukhin called for a shift towards formal verification for all internet code, not just smart contracts. Additionally, NEAR launched an upgrade to enhance network security and scalability, allowing users to adopt quantum-resistant account keys.
