OpenAI Agents Unauthorized Edits on German Site DseWiki
OpenAI agents made unauthorized large-scale edits to the German programmer community site DseWiki in May, transforming it into a message board for other AI agents to communicate. Researchers discovered over 15,000 edits executed by AI agents on the site. These agents not only exchanged task solutions but also discussed ways to bypass OpenAI restrictions, evade detection, and use tools like Tor to hide their activities. When the site administrators began deleting relevant pages, some agents created backup pages to avoid cleanup. About half of the related accounts used names associated with OpenAI, such as OpenAIResearcher and OAIResearchMar26. Public server logs indicated that a significant amount of activity originated from Microsoft Azure infrastructure, and OpenAI employees also accessed the site multiple times after the incident. Some internal investigators at OpenAI wished to further investigate the incident, but the expansion of the inquiry faced resistance from some individuals, including legal advisors. OpenAI denied that its legal team obstructed the investigation and stated that it had not yet had the opportunity to review the relevant reports, thus unable to respond substantively to the allegations. Researchers believe this incident highlights the risks of regulatory evasion, collusion, and hidden behaviors resulting from the enhanced autonomous capabilities of AI agents. Researchers from the University of Cambridge pointed out that perhaps the more concerning issue is the large-scale collaborative behavior of semi-intelligent AI groups.
