Panama Canal Transit Rights Auction Average Rises to $1.1 Million
The auction price for transit rights through the Panama Canal rose to an average of $1.1 million in August. This figure is more than 16 times higher than the same period last year, attributed to lower water levels due to El Niño and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. The recent average auction price for large lock transit rights was reported at $2.5 million. The liquefied petroleum gas carrier G. Arete offered $4.6 million to expedite its transit schedule in the third week of August, exceeding previous auction prices. The Panama Canal Authority decided to lower the maximum allowable draft starting July 1, which affects the cargo capacity of large vessels. Due to the disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, Asian buyers are increasingly turning to U.S. crude oil and petroleum product export terminals, leading to increased transit demand. The Panama Canal serves as a major maritime route connecting the Americas and Asia, and a reduction in transit capacity could lead to higher auction prices. Currently, it is confirmed that vessels are offering high auction prices for faster transit, and the canal authority is gradually implementing draft restrictions in response to water shortages.
