Rising Demand for Downside Protection in S&P 500 as Macro Risks Take Center Stage
On July 31, as the earnings season nears its end, inflation, uncertainty surrounding Federal Reserve policies, and geopolitical tensions have once again become focal points in the market. Traders have increased their hedging positions against overall volatility in the S&P 500, leading to a rise in demand for downside protection on the index. Goldman Sachs is optimistic about reverse dispersion trades, betting on an increase in S&P 500 index volatility while simultaneously betting on a decrease in individual stock volatility. This reflects market expectations that macro risks may drive up stock correlations, causing the overall index volatility to exceed that of individual stocks. Additionally, as the historically volatile period from August to September approaches, investors are further increasing their downside protection to prepare for potentially larger fluctuations in the S&P 500.
