StarkWare Demonstrates Quantum-Resistant Transactions on Bitcoin Mainnet
StarkWare has demonstrated quantum-resistant transactions on the Bitcoin mainnet. The Bitcoin, whose public keys have already been revealed, is estimated to be between 6.04 million and 7.052314 million BTC, making it difficult to cover the entire risk with this method. On August 26, it was announced on the blog that the first transaction using the Quantum Safe Bitcoin (QSB) method was mined without changing the Bitcoin consensus rules. This transaction was included in block 964,199, and the mining time was 5:48:34 AM KST on August 27. QSB utilizes hash conditions instead of elliptic curve signatures to move funds before the public key is revealed. However, QSB does not help addresses where the public key has already been exposed and is classified as a non-standard transaction, thus not propagating through the general mempool. The exposure amounts vary by institution, with Coinbase reporting that approximately 6.9 million BTC are exposed to quantum attacks. Glassnode classified 6.04 million BTC, while ChainQuery categorized 7.052314 million BTC as at risk. According to the BIP-361 document, more than 34% of the total Bitcoin had revealed public keys as of March 1. Institutional funds are also flowing in, with Stratiq and Galaxy announcing a Bitcoin security consortium and a quantum resilience initiative, respectively. This demonstration confirms a path for Bitcoin to respond to quantum threats, but the already exposed amounts remain outside the protection scope.
