Ukraine and Europe to Test Freyja Missile Defense System in 2027
Ukraine and nine European countries plan to conduct the first test of the Freyja missile defense system, which will intercept a ballistic target, in July 2027. Freyja will integrate the Ukrainian interceptor FP-7.X with European radars and control systems. The first prototype is expected in the first half of 2027. Deputy Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council David Aloyan stated that the system should demonstrate the ability to detect and track targets. The FP-7.X has completed the initial testing phase but has not yet intercepted a ballistic target. Even a successful test does not guarantee the system's readiness for combat duty, as integration with various radars and certification will be required. The FP-7.X is planned to be significantly cheaper than the Patriot missile, which costs about $3.33 million. The expected price for the FP-7.X is up to €1 million. Fire Point also plans to produce up to 2,000 interceptors per year, but a production line has not yet been established. Funding for Freyja has not yet been agreed upon, and participants will need to determine development costs and the funding model.
