US Invests $750 Million in Rare Earth Supply Chain
The U.S. government is investing $750 million in US SIIE, LLC to secure its rare earth supply chain. This investment is aimed at procuring essential materials needed for defense equipment and electronic and energy infrastructure from outside China. The U.S. Department of Defense announced on the 24th that it would inject funds into US SIIE. The investment will support a purchase agreement for mixed rare earth carbonate produced at the Pela Emma project in central Brazil's Seraverde. The total amount of this investment structure is $1.55 billion, which includes the $750 million investment from the U.S. Department of Defense, a $300 million purchase agreement from the Defense Logistics Agency, and a $500 million agreement from major banks. The U.S. Department of Defense explained that this contract aims to ensure a stable supply of rare earth elements necessary for the defense industry, such as dysprosium, terbium, neodymium, and praseodymium. These elements are used to enhance the thermal stability and magnetic strength of neodymium-iron-boron magnets. Mike Cadena, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, emphasized that securing a resilient supply chain is a fundamental requirement for combat operations. Rare earth magnets are used in military equipment, and the U.S. Department of Defense stated that the same materials are also needed for energy infrastructure and the electronics industry. USA Rare Earths announced that a special purpose vehicle has completed capital procurement to purchase 100% of the phase one production volume from Seraverde.
