U.S. Recession Probability at 25%, Employment, Growth, and Manufacturing Indicators Remain Strong
ChatGPT has projected a 25% probability of a recession in the U.S. over the next six months; however, employment, growth, and manufacturing indicators remain strong. Pinball has categorized ChatGPT's baseline scenario as 'sustained low growth without recession' at 55%, 'soft landing with strong growth' at 20%, 'mild recession' at 20%, and 'medium to large recession' at 5%. The 25% figure is interpreted as an AI risk assessment rather than government statistics. The U.S. Department of Labor reported that non-farm employment increased by 162,000 in August, with the unemployment rate holding steady at 4.1%. The U.S. Department of Commerce announced that the real GDP grew at an annual rate of 1.5% in the second quarter. Inflation and consumer sentiment remain burdensome, with the July PCE price index rising 4.1% year-on-year. The manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) stood at 54.6, indicating expansion for the eighth consecutive month. A recession signifies a situation where production, employment, income, and consumption all contract, requiring a comprehensive assessment of multiple economic activity indicators rather than a single metric. Polymarket has set the probability of a U.S. recession by the end of 2026 at 8%, while JP Morgan has estimated it at 35%. Currently, the U.S. economy is caught between slowing down and holding steady, with the next key indicator being the August Consumer Price Index (CPI).
