Amazon Disassembles Rare Books for AI Training
Amazon is purchasing a large number of rare books, removing their spines and scanning the contents to obtain text data for training AI models. A rare book placed in a tracker ultimately ends up at Amazon's facility VGT3 in Las Vegas, which is marked with a "dinosaur claw holding a book" logo. Amazon states that the company acquires books through commercial channels to improve the products and services used by customers. Training large language models requires an enormous amount of text data, and publicly available content on the internet has already been extensively used, making out-of-print, rare, or hard-to-find books a new source of training material. The value of such texts lies in the fact that content published before 2022 typically does not contain AI-generated text, as excessive AI-generated content can lead to "model collapse," resulting in a decline in output quality. Therefore, how AI companies obtain high-quality original texts has once again become a focal point.
