According to research from Crypto.com, the global virtual asset market last week showed a complex trend influenced by the decline in Bitcoin (BTC) mining difficulty, high volatility in the U.S. stock market, the expansion of blockchain adoption in traditional finance, and simultaneous regulatory issues in South Korea and the U.S. Notably, Bitcoin mining difficulty has decreased by 15% compared to its peak at the beginning of the year, and the flow of funds into U.S. spot ETFs has shown a clear differentiation between Bitcoin and Ethereum (ETH), indicating that market risk appetite has moved in a limited manner.

The U.S. financial market exhibited significant volatility during the week following the Federal Reserve's decision to hold interest rates steady on July 29, as inflation concerns and signals of economic slowdown intersected. The yield on 10-year U.S. Treasury bonds rose to 4.75%, triggering fears of prolonged tightening; however, the Core Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index only increased by 0.1% month-over-month, signaling some easing of price pressures. The preliminary GDP growth rate for the second quarter remained at 1.5%, suggesting a slowdown in economic momentum, but strong performances in the cloud and AI sectors from Microsoft and Amazon revived investor sentiment.

As a result, the tech-heavy Nasdaq rose by 1.59% for the week, while the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average also closed up by 1.05% and 1.04%, respectively. Crypto.com noted that this trend was reflected in the virtual asset market as well. From a policy perspective, the regulatory trends in the U.S. and South Korea have significantly impacted the market. The U.S. Senate's CLARITY bill amendment focuses on prohibiting government officials from issuing digital assets and providing clearer regulatory guidelines. Major asset management firms like BlackRock, Fidelity, and Goldman Sachs support this, citing it could reduce regulatory uncertainty. In contrast, traditional banks, including JPMorgan Chase, oppose it, arguing that provisions for stablecoin interest could create an unfair competitive advantage over existing bank deposits.

This conflict goes beyond mere interpretation of the bill; it reflects a clash of interests over who will lead the digital asset industry. Asset managers expect the expansion of tokenized assets and on-chain finance, while banks are concerned about encroachment on their deposit-based business models. In South Korea, the schedule for taxing virtual assets has been effectively confirmed. The South Korean government reaffirmed that a 22% tax on capital gains from virtual assets will be implemented starting January 1, 2027. After being postponed three times since its initial proposal in 2022, the government plans to proceed without further delays. Payments are processed based on the UAE Dirham (AED), indicating that real-life payment touchpoints are spreading to major global brands.

BNY Mellon in the U.S. has launched a blockchain-based platform that transitions fund ownership records and investor transactions on-chain. This aims to reduce manual data reconciliation while operating in parallel with the existing system, enhancing back-office efficiency. This is significant as traditional financial institutions are beginning to adopt blockchain not as an 'experiment' but as a tool for operational efficiency.

Morgan Stanley has listed Ethereum (MSSE) and Solana (MSOL) spot ETPs on the NYSE Arca. Notably, it has designed a structure that directly pays 100% of staking rewards from the held Ethereum (ETH) and Solana (SOL) to investors, emphasizing transparency in profit distribution. This suggests that institutional investment products are evolving beyond simple price tracking to encompass the economic returns of blockchain networks.
