Itaú Delivers R$ 12.4 Billion and Confirms Leadership Among Major Banks

Itaú Unibanco reported a recurring net profit of R$ 12.4 billion in the second quarter of 2026. This figure was slightly below the estimates compiled by LSEG, which pointed to R$ 12.5 billion. In practical terms, the difference is negligible: the bank delivered exactly what the market expected.

The projections from four major global and local firms converged around a result close to R$ 12.5 billion, with a return on equity (ROE) estimated between 24% and 25%. The fact that Itaú continues to operate within this profitability range is, in itself, the most relevant story of the balance sheet.

To put it into perspective, an ROE of 24% means that for every R$ 100 of equity invested in the bank, R$ 24 returns as profit on an annualized basis. This is a level that few banks in the world sustain quarter after quarter. It is precisely this consistency that differentiates Itaú from its Brazilian peers, as we have explored in our coverage of the financial sector.

Growth Slows, but Asset Quality Sustains Premium

The point that deserves attention is not the absolute profit number, but the trajectory. Analysts had already been signaling that the growth rate of Itaú's results would enter a more moderate phase throughout 2026. After consecutive quarters of robust expansion, the comparison base became higher, and the room for positive surprises diminished.

This is not necessarily a problem. In cycles of high interest rates like the current one, the ability to maintain the quality of the credit portfolio matters more than accelerating origination. And this is precisely where Itaú excels. Delinquency remains under control, with indicators that analysts classify as superior to those of direct competitors.

This dynamic creates an interesting asymmetry. While other large banks face pressure from provisions and adjustments in higher-risk credit portfolios, Itaú manages to navigate the cycle with less turbulence. The result is a balance sheet that, even without growing at the speed of previous quarters, maintains returns well above the cost of capital.

As we analyzed in previous articles about the banking scenario, high Selic rates tend to benefit banks with a more conservative credit profile, and Itaú is the clearest example of this thesis in the Brazilian market.

What Itaú's Results Indicate About the Banking Sector in 2026

Itaú's balance sheet serves as a thermometer for the rest of the sector. When the most profitable bank in the country delivers results in line with expectations, without significant negative surprises, the reading is that the credit environment remains functional, albeit more selective.

Three points deserve highlighting for those following the sector:

    • Controlled Delinquency: Itaú continues to have asset quality indicators better than the system average. This suggests that, at least for the clientele served by the bank, the credit deterioration cycle did not accelerate in the second quarter.
    • Resilient Financial Margin: With Selic rates at high levels, the margin with the market tends to be pressured, but the margin with clients continues to sustain the result. This reflects a more defensive portfolio mix.
    • ROE as a Competitive Differentiator: Operating with an ROE of 24% to 25% positions Itaú not only as a leader among Brazilian banks but also among the most profitable banks in Latin America. This level justifies the valuation premium that the market assigns to the stock.

For investors following the sector, the most relevant data is not whether Itaú made R$ 12.4 billion or R$ 12.5 billion. It is whether the bank can maintain profitability above 24% in the coming quarters, even as credit growth slows. The signal this quarter is that it can.

What to Expect for the Second Half

The outlook for the coming months carries known challenges. Prolonged monetary tightening tends to slow demand for credit and may pressure delinquency in more sensitive segments, such as individuals and small businesses. For Itaú, the impact is likely to be less than for competitors with greater exposure to these segments.

Another factor to monitor is competition with fintechs and digital banks, which continue to gain market share in products like credit cards and personal loans. As we discussed in our coverage of financial technology, the digitalization of the sector is a structural trend that pressures the service revenues of traditional banks.

Still, Itaú has demonstrated adaptability. The bank's digital operation has grown in recent years, and the active customer base in digital channels already far exceeds those served in physical branches. The question is not whether Itaú will lose relevance to fintechs, but whether it can defend its margins while absorbing the transition.

The profit of R$ 12.4 billion in the second quarter is not headline news for being surprising. It is relevant precisely because it confirms a thesis: in a high-interest environment with moderate growth, consistency is worth more than acceleration. And few banks in Brazil demonstrate this as clearly as Itaú.
