Overdue Business Debts in Russia Reach 9 Trillion Rubles
In the first five months of 2026, overdue receivables of enterprises in Russia increased to 8.99 trillion rubles (112.53 billion dollars), which is 9.9% higher than at the beginning of the year. The share of overdue debts in the total volume rose from 6.2% to 6.7%, and the number of companies with debts reached 18,298. The accumulated amount is nearly equal to 4% of Russia's projected GDP in 2026. The main cause of the crisis is payment delays from buyers, leading to a chain reaction of non-payments. High interest rates and slowing economic growth exacerbate the situation. Small and medium-sized businesses suffer the most due to limited financial reserves and difficulties accessing credit. Large companies often delay payments to suppliers, using them as a source of financing. In the export sector, the share of overdue debts exceeded 9% due to issues with international payments. The Center for Macroeconomic Analysis and Short-Term Forecasting acknowledged that official statistics do not reflect the full picture, as companies often do not recognize debts as overdue. The growth of overdue debts indicates that businesses are increasingly replacing bank loans with delayed payments to counterparties. The payment crisis creates vulnerabilities in the economy and intensifies shortages in civilian sectors.
